Who's Calling the Shots? How to Respond Effectively to Children's Fascination with War Toys.
By Nancy Carlsson-Paige & Diane E. Levin
I was so excited when I saw this book, I had hoped to find the answer to all my questions about this exact question. I didn’t. Life is not that simple. But I did get a rich discussion about social paradigms, what we allow our children to have access to and how we support them to understand it all when they discover it anyway. Full of practical ideas.
You will understand the importance of play, how to redirect or support play, ideas for setting up positive play, how and when to stand your ground and how to teach your children about violence without interfering with their own learning processes. And that very hard question — should I buy them that war toy they keep asking me for? What about guns? Is it okay to let them act it out? This book was written 10 years ago but the subject is timeless, and so are the answers. Parents of boys will easily reach for this one but parents of girls needs this too! Violence affects girls as much as boys, even if they don’t play it out so obviously.
