The Omnivore’s Dilemma - The search for a perfect meal in a fast food world
By Michael Pollan
This beautifully written book takes you on one man’s journey to trace his family’s meals back to their origins. Michael Pollan visits an industrial corn farm, following his families McDonalds meal (eaten in the car as so many meals are now consumed) back to its origins. He also visits commercial organic farms and farmers who provide for consumers locally, getting to know the farmers along the way. He attempts to see the slaughter of a beef steer but is denied access, but does manage to slaughter dozens of chickens and shoot his first wild pig. No stone is left unturned and every aspect of our modern diet is dissected. Interspersed are bits of the history and politics behind our food. The final meal is comprised of food he foraged or hunted himself. This journey is philosophical but practical in its approach. The book is difficult to put down at times; the real life characters are very interesting and endearing. Even after finishing the book, it leaves you with much to contemplate while we walk down the supermarket isle doing one of our most important tasks-feeding our family.
