Heeding the collective call to get serious about sustainability and social change, Kindred magazine has launched Media that Matters. Its mission is to bring innovative media to local communities to inform us about the challenges we must face in order to make any worthwhile progress towards a sustainable future - and inspire us to take action right now within our own communities and organisations.
The purpose of Media that Matters is to bring people together at a local level to discuss and respond to the big issues of our times, to support local sustainability and eco-justice initiatives and co-create community responses.
They use a variety of media such as documentaries, DVDs, public forums and study circles as a vehicle for these discussions and produce supporting materials to accompany them. Films in the Media that Matters program include The Future of Food, The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, Stolen Childhoods (a feature length doco on child labour) and many more.
Media that Mattersthen enables a network of local organisations and venues who partner with them in promoting these activities. If Media that Mattersfires your imagination and you:
• belong to a community / educational organisation or action group with an interest in ecological sustainability and justice and/or
• have ongoing access to a local venue suitable for DVD screenings and discussion forums, such as a café, community centre or hall…
…then you are in a position to help build our Media that Matters network.
Network partners have access to the continually growing catalogue of Media that Matters DVDs – selected from the work of outstanding filmmakers around the world whose documentaries inform and inspire. Media that Matters negotiates the necessary public screening rights from the copyright owners and arrange bulk supplies of the DVDs. Network partners organise local screenings and discussion forums.
For our network partners we also supply regular catalogue up-dates and access to discussion kits and screening packs prepared for each movie. These can be customised to your local requirements.
If you are excited about the potential for a real grass-roots movement to build a better world right here in our own backyard, there are lots of ways to get involved. Begin by contacting kindred for details of how to get going with local film screenings.
